Homestead of Nathan VV - Lucinda Cole family, now demolished.

Foundation remaining of the homestead in Methuen Twp., Peterborough Co., estimated to be Con. 1, Lot 3 S 1/2. Submitter Wayne VanVolkenburg states this lot was registered to Nathan on July 8, 1898.

This location is on the west side of the extension of Vansickle Rd. north of Cordova Mines. This was the Vansickle Settlement where some of the children are stated to have been born as early as the 1860's, and where Nathan died in 1915. It is just over the county line into Peterborough Co.

IGI file notes for David Lake (1843-1923) son of Nathan Lake and Juliane FOLLICK and birthplace stated as "Cranberry Lake", Ontario.

The LDS Church has user-submitted sources for Julia Ann VV's surname as Follick. Follick is a common switch for VV (see evidence). I suspect that the source records will be marriage / death or military records for David Lake. Another reference mentions the death record of David's sister Adeline Lake-Landgraf where the parents are named Nathan Lake and Unknown Vanvolkenfing.

Immigration Record: Thomas Hannigan of Marshville, Ontario, Canada crossing into the States 5 May 1920, with intended destination his "bro-in-law" John Doolittle.

Two months earlier, this same Thomas Hannigan of Marshville, had been the informant on the death record of Auburn, NY native Rose Bailey who was a sister of John F. Doolittle of Auburn. Rose had been interred in Auburn. Thomas Hannigan had stated he had no relation to Rose Bailey, but his wife Clara Pelkey had family in Auburn NY. There IS a connection, but what? And the card is stamped "rejected".

In Search of a Grave for Henry VV - Hannah Lounsberry
In Search of a Grave for Henry VV - Hannah Lounsberry

Henry James VanValkenburg was a cooper and had lived between mid-1860's and early 1880's in Hay Township, Huron County (according to census and birth records of children). During that time he lost his first wife Hannah Lounsberry, and remarried Hannah Norton.

Henry died in 1891 at Grand Bend, to the south of Huron, and his burial place, and that of first wife Hannah L., have not been located.

In the 1869 Directory of Ontario, under a town called Johnsonís Mills / Lakeview / Lake View: Henry VV and a James Lounsberry, coopers.

James Lounsberry, on censuses for Hay Twp., is married to Lucinda, and they are old enough to be parents of Hannah Lounsberry. The Lounsberry family may have connected with Henry and his brother John D. VV, while living in Woodstock, 1851.

In modern maps, this area is called Saint Joseph, on the road that leads to the lake from a larger town, Zurich.

We donít have an 1881 census for the family, however, the first children born to Henry and second wife Hannah Norton, were also born in Hay Twp., and one infant died at Hensall, nearby.

On the 1862 map of the area, near Lakeview is shown a LouisDeneny. I suspect this was a mis-transcription of Lounsberry. James and Lucinda Lounsberry, being elderly at the time, may be buried in the area, and it is worth searching for them, along with Hannah and the infant son of the second marriage. (Assuming the family members would be buried together).
