Notes about Truman VV (1834-1916) based on reminiscences of son Thaddeus Edward VV and grand-daughter Dorothy Eileen VV-Brooks.
Notes about Truman VV (1834-1916) based on reminiscences of son Thaddeus Edward VV and grand-daughter Dorothy Eileen VV-Brooks.

This branch of the VV family were living in Norwich, Oxford Co., Ontario by 1840. Hand-written genealogical notations on file at the Norwich Archives. (Note: progenitor Cornelius VV was not an UEL, but his wife Lois Davis was a DUE.)

The notes refer to Truman VV's time in Chicago when expelled from school probably 1845-1855 time period. His father sent him to live with three uncles living near Chicago. These are probably Hiram VV's two brothers-in-law: Robert B. Chisholm and Atwood Sackrider, and/or Hiram's brothers: Cornelius VV and Noah VV who had followed Chisholm to Elgin, Illinois on lumber importing for the Chicago Harbour construction, and then were in south Wisconsin on mining prospects.

Obituary of Bessie Vann-McLellan (1889-1939), death at Detroit Michigan, funeral in Ontario.
Obituary of Bessie Vann-McLellan (1889-1939), death at Detroit Michigan, funeral in Ontario.

St. Thomas Times Journal, 4 Jul 1939 p. 8 col. 6

Next of kin: brother David Vann of St. Thomas, sister Mrs. Charles Swartz of St. Thomas, Mrs. Frank McPhail of Union, and Mrs. Catherine Gilsdorf of Detroit. Several McPhail nephews were pallbearers, and it appears their mother's maiden name was "Stured".

Bessie's death record in Michigan, states her parents' names as William Vann and Jessie "Steward", but Bessie's date of birth falls within William Vann's marriage to Jane Hewitt. Another mystery: who is sister Mrs. Charles Swartz?

Next of kin: [some names have been obscured to protect privacy], wife Irene Provan Vann of St. Thomas, sister Mrs. Frank McPhail of Union, sister Mrs. Bessie Swartz of Delhi, and Mrs. Jack Lawrence of Detroit.

Again, who is this sister Bessie Swartz of Delhi who in the 1939 obituary for sister Bessie Vann-McLellan was called Mrs. Charles Swartz?

Obituary: Catherine VV-Waite (1829-1913), Chicago, IL

Kat Von B ?!

How did this dedicated suffragist become identified in death as merely the wife of a famous attorney? and with such a botched spelling of the name? Looking at news items in the same papers, suffragists were described as 'rioters' and women were encouraged to take their places as good wives and carers of the poor. Several rights we take for granted that were championed by Catherine and her husband: a woman's right to inherit the estate of her husband, a woman's right to revert to her maiden name after divorce. Although access to med school was denied Catherine, it was opened to the next generations, including her daughter Lucy.

OCCUPATION: Thaddeus VanValkenburg (1809-1891) Police Chief
1857 Lovell's Directory shows Thaddeus VanValkenburg is the Chief of Police of London City, Middlesex Co.

The 1851 census, Thaddeus is a 'bailif' and is enumerated in Mosa Twp., outside of his usual residence of London, Ontario.

The 1871 census, Thaddeus is a 'detective' living in London.

The William Perkins Bull family notes, gathered genealogies and interviews from the 1920's regarding the original families of Peel Co., states: "Thaddeus VanValkenburg was the first Chief of Police at London, Ontario 1849".
