7 March 2011 - Norwich Gore Methodist Church (built 1861) moves to new location!

The intermarried Merrill and VanValkenburgh families living east of Norwich village, contributed funds, supplies and labour to the building of this historical church. It has recently been moved into town!

You MUST watch this spectacular video of the 5km move of this 150 year old church across farm fields to its new location on the grounds of the Norwich District Museum & Archives!  http://www.norwichgazette.com/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=3012228

I rarely venture this far from home on genealogical research and was indeed regretting such a long soggy drive, I had to park in a corner of the small lot because this big CHURCH was in the way, propped precariously on a small float!  Turns out I missed the move by three days, and was soon to find out that a certain Hiram VV and William Merrill contributed funds, labour and/or supplies to the erection of this Methodist Church in the Norwich Gore.

Hiram VV lived east of Norwich Village near the Oxford-Brant county line.  The county line was divided in the south by a wedged shape strip of farms called the Norwich Gore, and the Merrills lived on the Brant side north of the Gore.  Hiram VV was a master carpenter and I was told at the Archives that Hiram contributed to the woodwork.  Hiram's then ten-year-old son Hopkins would later marry one of Merrill's daughters and become a partner in the Merrill firm.

The church will be permanently preserved on the museum grounds.

Here's a little something about the history of Merrill and this church, obtained from a productive day at the Norwich and District Archive!
