Henry Follick m. Jane Tiffin, family a.k.a. "Van" [see tree]

This family is not yet connected to the official genealogy of the VanValkenburg family on the NAVVF site, but the NAVVF has an idea of which branch this Henry Follick descends from.

In coming months we will be adding photos and scans of original documents directly to individuals in each tree. (We welcome your help with this and you may use this form to contact us or to join this collaborative project as a Contributor).

This Follick family has not been connected to known Follick branches in Canada, and the first instance of this couple in records is an 1845 marriage in Lambton Co. of Henry Follick to Jane Tiffin.  The transcription states: "Jane Tiffin of Dawn" which would be Dawn Twp., Lambton Co. Ontario, and the marriage is filed under the Western District which included the SW Ontario counties of Lambton, Kent, etc.  The marriage may have taken place in Dawn, Lambton, or anywhere else in the Western District, but probably Lambton Co.

Interestingly, one witness to this marriage came from a specific area of Kent Co. centered on Wallaceburg, Chatham Gore Twp., Kent Co., and later moved to the same town that the Follick family children were living in by 1870's and 1880s in Montcalm Co., Michigan.  Also of interest was their shared occupations: wagon maker, carriage maker.

As stated, the Follick family, after two children were born in Ontario, moved to Michigan about 1850.  The family are found on the 1860 Census for Northport, Leelanau Twp., Michigan.

No graves or death records have been found for Henry Follick and Jane Tiffin-Follick, although the NAVVF have notes of an 1861 death for Henry Follick, with the estate having been settled in 1879 naming all children at that time with their married names: CARLYLE, RAY, DAVIS.

The Michigan-born children have stated on records their birthplaces alternatively as Northport, Leelanau Co. or Trufant / Greenville, Montcalm Co.  If they were enumerated in Northport in 1860, that is probably their birthplaces, but at some point they must have informed family they grew up in Montcalm Co., further south, and this is where many of them ended up by the time of their marriages.

On census records, the children of this couple quite consistently give the birthplaces of their parents as: father b. Pennsylvania and mother b. Ireland.  However, their marriage records and census records often indicate Canada as birthplaces of their parents.  Perhaps there was confusion as to the census question - was it actual birth place or an 'ancestral home'?  One daughter gives "Irish & Dutch" as her ethnic origin.

Although the family did move to Michigan before 1860, they seem to have maintained ties with friends in Canada; their daughter Ellen married another wagon-maker George Ray and returned to Wallaceburg, Canada, to raise her family in the 1870s. It is unclear whether Ellen and George Ray stayed in Canada, but their children were in Michigan as adults.  And speaking of maintaining connections, the wedding witness William Winters, also a waggon/carriage maker from Wallaceburg, Canada moved his family to Montcalm Co. Michigan.

One exceptional circumstance about this family, is that one Michigan-born son - John - changed his surname to Van.  Married three times, two of his marriage records he stated his parents to be "Henry Van & Jane Tiffin".

In the Canadian VV history, there have been other incidences of name change VV to Van, and VV to V/Follick, but not yet Follick to Van.  Therefore searching for the origins of this Follick family, we cannot rule out that Henry solely used Follick as his surname, and we cannot rule  out Henry's birthplace as Pennsylvania either.

Coincidental connections to other V/Follick, VV or Van branches:

1. John Van's parents are named in records, so this ends the theory that he was related to the VV-Van line living nearby in Clam Lake, Lake Co., Michigan.

2.  NAVVF notes a suggestion that Henry Follick was a son of John Vollick and Sarah Decow, but with no supporting evidence.  Note the absence of this branch's family names (Cornelius, Sarah, Matthias, etc.) in the children of Henry Follick and Jane Tiffen.

3. Perhaps the connection to the John-Vollick-Decow line was through John Vollick's grandfather and aunts/uncles.  In the Revolution, this Vollick family of the Mohawk Valley New York was politically-divided.  The Vollick son who remained loyal to the British came to Canada as a Loyalist, and side that remained Patriots, did indeed remove from NY to Wysox, Pennsylvania.  Perhaps there's a connection to this line.  Here are the NAVVF's notes on John Vollick's grandfather Isaac Vollick (1712-1796) who died in Wysox, Pennsylvania.
