Joseph VV m. Marguerite (Du)Page [see tree]

This family is not yet connected to the official genealogy of the VanValkenburg family on the NAVVF site, although Vol 2 has them mentioned as strays in Canada.

In coming months we will be adding photos and scans of original documents directly to individuals in each tree. (We welcome your help with this and you may use this form to contact us or to join this collaborative project as a Contributor).

This VV family seems to have barely touched down in Canada before moving to the States, but, as one descendant is quite famous, and her biography mentions her roots in Canada, the tree is included.

The biography of Catherine VanValkenburgh-Waite (attached to her record) states she was born in "Dumbries, Ontario" (St. George, Dumfries Twp. actually) in 1829 to a Joseph VV and French-Canadian Margeurite Page.

Joseph VV was stated to have come directly from Holland leaving "vast estates" there, and then taking up farming in south-western Ontario.  Joseph and Marguerite were apparently married in the Niagara area.  More likely, Joseph VV descended from Loyalists who had lost their holdings during the Revolution, as the difficulty of pioneer life may have made this man turn back if he had the option?!

The family moved to Iowa in 1846 and two children became lawyers.  Catherine, being a woman, was not allowed to practice law, but she taught it, and she and her lawyer husband moved to Chicago.  Catherine was a noted women's activist and suffragist.

The family were hard workers and pioneers in their chosen fields.  Little is known of the brothers, except that one married and lived in Iowa, also a lawyer.
