Rideau Military Settlement
Perth 25th April 1820
Return of Persons Entitled to Patent Grants for the several Allotments of Land Attached to their Names respectively in this Return
Name: 308 Jacob Vanvottenbuck, P. [this was rank, in this case P for Private]
Description of Persons? : Glengr. Fs. [Glengarry Fencibles]
Description of Allotments:
Township: Bathurst
No. of Concess.: 5
No. of Lot: N. East Hay -- 20
Number of Acres: 100
Date of Completion of the prescribed term of Settlement: 2nd May 1819
Total Number of Acres: 100
Remarks: [none]
[Other names on the list are a mix of officers and privates, and although the officers of the Glengarry Regt. are prescribed 200 acres, the privates tend to be prescribed only 100. This becomes important as Jacob petitions for an extra 100 acres in 1835 saying it was promised him upon enlisting. This may be true as Jacob was recruited into the 1st regiment under the terms set by Sir Prevost.]
[Also note on the page are soldiers from DeWatteville's Regiment. Jacob would re-petition in 1835 for an extra 100 acres under the name Wattenburck. Evidently, he was known to his commanders as
"DeWattenburgh" which may have been a nickname, or perhaps a clerical
error during the war and he kept it to avoid confusion. Or perhaps the change was deliberate
on his part for whatever reason. It appears the Surveyor General in 1835 was
annoyed at this 'contradiction' as it took a number of months to locate this original claim under VanVoltenbuck.]

[One more list of names completes the petition. It may have been signed
by a McDonnell, if so, who may have been the original Glengarry Regt. commander]
