3 | ![]() | 1892 Marriage of a Sadie VV to George Leflar, d/o Samuel & Alvina VV May connect to another "mystery" VV - "Miss Lottie Vann" (see story). This Sadie and George Leflar, acc to a family tree on Ancestry, had a daughter named Viva Alvina, also the family moved to Genesee Co., Michigan before 1910 where "Sadie" goes by "Sidney" Leflar on all records. Here's a family that seems to fit - they went by surname VV, Vollick and Vann, apparently... (see attached individuals). In this case, Sadie might be Sarah Catherine VV b. 1 Aug 1874 in Charlotteville.
4 | ![]() | A "Miss Vanvalkenburg" marries a James Smith, 1887, Otterville news A marriage record has not been found to correspond. No indication of where the bride was from, although the news item was posted in the Woodstock Review newspaper in reference to Otterville, in Oxford Co. The groom, being from "east of here" may have been from Norfolk Co. This may be the marriage of Samuel James Smith and Cynthia Isobel Vollick. If so, Cynthia would have been young, about 15 years old. This couple seem to have started having children five years later.

14 | ![]() | CENSUS-1871 - Alex VanValkenburg--M.H. Unknown Brighton,East Northumberland,Ontario Does anyone have any information for them? A CLUE: Alex. VV aged 58 in 1871 (b. abt 1823 in Ontario) is a separate, but adjoining, household to the C.A. Fiddick household on this census. Viewing the corresponding Agricultural Schedule of this census, the Fiddick household reported crops at Brighton Township Concession 4 Lot 6. The Land Registry Abstract Index of Deeds for that full 200-acre parcel shows part-owner Charles Fiddick. Another part owner was David Mahany VanVolkenburg and his wife Cynthia. By whatever means he obtained the small portion of 34 acres, is not known, but on 25 Aug 1846, David wrote a will regarding the property which was registered in 1877, probably at his death. Note: Alex was of age to be a son of David and Cynthia, although no children have been found in census records. The day that David VV wrote the will, was the day a surgeon had come to amputate his foot. In petitions to various land boards David explained he had retained a musket ball in his ankle from the war of 1812's Battle of Lundy's Lane, and finally was compelled to have the foot amputated, 32 years and one month to the day of the Battle. Although David had received a land grant for military service, he had been unable to perform settlement duties and thereby forfeited the land. He was a shoemaker by trade and a "cripple", and perhaps any children had lived 'out' of the home.

34 | ![]() | Who is this talkative cousin "Miss Lottie Vann" in 1896, Chatham, Ontario? (Eighteen year old Lottie VV tattles on her free-spirited cousin while the parents are away). Article shows once again a name change from VV to Vann. The VV surname was interchanged with Van(n) and Vollick/Follick through many branches. (See another example: third paragraph of the first article). An 1896 City Directory for Chatham shows two separate lines, one for a Samuel Vann and one for a Lottie Vann, but both of Maple & Queen St. (see bottom-right of this image) Lottie may be short for Charlotte. She is 18 yrs of age in 1896 so born about 1878. The article implies that "Mr. and Mrs. Vann" are Lottie's parents. She mentions the family have come from a previous place "East" and that they are related to Lefflers. But first, clues about Bella Acker, a cousin of Lottie: BIRTH: Isabella Acker b. 21 Apr 1873 to Andrew Acker & Sarah Lefler, Bayham Twp., Elgin Co. Con 6 Lot 12 *subject of the article - (an almost a comical portrayal, but I have one other news item that points to a serious need for Bertha's protection, and Bella's valiant efforts to protect her). Clues about a Samuel VV who is married to a Alvina Leflar (presumed to be the sister of Bella Acker's mother): No marriage record has been found for this couple, but they are named in records of daughter "Sadie". (Try not to get confused as this Sadie, b. abt 1874 in Charlotteville Twp. Norfolk Co., actually marries another Leflar.) MARRIAGE: Sadie VV b. 1874 Charlotteville Twp. Norfolk Co., d/o Samuel & Alvine VV, m. George H. Laflar b. 1866 Townsend Twp. Norfolk Co., s/o Adam & Nancy Laflar, 20 Oct 1892 at Middlesex Co. (Ontario, Canada) see record (It seems this Sadie and George Lafler moved to Genesee Co., Michigan where Sadie went by "Sidney" Leflar.) George Leflar was the son of Alem O. Leflar and Nancy Slingerland b. 1865. Here's the family tree for Samuel VV who married a Melvina or Alvina Leflar. Their children were born in Norfolk Twp., specifically the 1874 birth of a daughter Sarah Catherine in Charlotteville Twp. Norfolk Co. *Note that Sadie and George named a daughter Viva Alvina. About the Reilley family who were known as Lefflers but changed to Reilley for reasons unknown: Family trees on Ancestry.com have another son of Alem O. Leflar and Nancy Slingerland, the oldest brother of George, named William A. Leflar b. 1848. He and wife Annie Sharp also moved to Genessee Co., Michigan where he and all children were named Riley. Back to Lottie... Any thoughts on her identity? Was Sadie known as Charlotte or Lottie? I would like to add Sadie to this tree after hearing from any descendants.
