KINGSTON-AREA PARISH (CHURCH / MISSION) RECORDS 1787-1840

 <PREV PAGE       HOME

The following are links to the transcribed parish records of "Lutheran Churches in Lennox" County in the late 1700's to early 1800's.  They were transcribed for publication in 1904: Vol. 5 Papers and Records, Ontario Historical Society, Thos. W. Casby.

Links to the start pages of each register are provided below, however the publication is an off-site link that may eventually disappear.  To save the entire e-book to your computer, click following link and 'Save As'  ->  PDF version

See introductory notes p. 136.  Some VanValkenburg (or related families) records have been noted and linked to, however we may have missed some.  Please do assist by suggesting any additions or corrections.

For other early Ontario records that have been published, click here.

The introductory notes describe what remains of the physical locations / cemeteries of each church at the time of publication 1904.  The notes refer to the original Lutheran congregation of the townships of Williamsburgh and Osnabruck (in Dundas Co. further east) established by German Loyalists.  Some VV families were among a group from Hoosick, Vermont who petitioned to settle in Canada under Rev. Samuel Schwerdfeger (see the petition); they seem to have intermarried with German Palatine families while living in the Hudson and Mohawk Valleys pre-Revolution.  It does not appear that the Schwerdfeger group was awarded land, but part of this Hoosick group established the first Lutheran "Zion" Church at Williamsburgh in 1789. Their first pastors were the Rev. Johann Wilhelm Samuel Schwerdfeger, 1791-1803, and the Rev. August Friedrich Meyer, 1804-1807.

Learn more about Rev. Schwerdtfeger (many spellings) and his son-in-law Rev. John Gunter Weagant here.  As for the congregations discussed in this collection of Lennox County records, the following notes suggest modern locations (see also the introductory notes):

Zion Lutheran - in Williamsburgh Twp., Dundas Co. (first Lutheran Congregation in Eastern Ontario)
Williamburg Twp. Con 5 Lot 31  (map it)
I suspect a number of old cemeteries have been moved here after the planned flooding for the St. Lawrence Seaway expansion; meaning the original church and cemetery are underwater, among the "Lost Villages".  This cemetery also known as Bouck's Hill?

Ebenezer (Chambers) Lutheran - Big Creek, N. Fredericksburgh Twp., Lennox Co.
N. Fredricksburgh Twp., Con 4 Lot 23  (map it)

St. Peter's Lutheran - Ernestown Twp., Lennox Co.
Ernesttown Twp., Con 2 Lot 16  (map it)

Stone church at Napanee Mills - Camden East Twp., Lennox Co.
"Upon the farm of John Bower, at the site of the present village of Strathcona, there was a stone Lutheran church which was torn down some years ago and the present Methodist church erected in its place."
Napanee Mills is not the same as the city now known as Greater Napanee, it is closer to Newburgh, Ontario.  The 1878 Meacham Atlas labels it as "Napanee Mills P.O." and indicates a C.M. Church at a corner north of the river.  An estimated location: (map it)

Schoolhouse Meeting in Ernesttown - Ernesttown Twp., Lennox Co.
Ernesttown locations described as "at Surtgerville", and "a school-house in the sixth concession of Ernesttown, the next school-house west of Switzer's Church, in the same range".  I believe this is Switzerville, the 6th Concession now known as Switzerville Road at Newburgh Rd.  There was a church at the east corner, and just to the West was a school.  "Surtgerville" may be a typo for Switzerville.  An estimated location for the school-house: (map it)  If so, this is Ernesttown Twp., Con 6 Lot 10.
